Layover flight and luggage question

Layover flight and luggage question?
I'm flying from Houston to Sacramento and have a layover in Phoenix. I've always booked continuous flights in the past and don't have any experience with layovers. So here's my question. When I get off in Phoenix, will they put the luggage on the second plane for me? Everyone says I can just go directly to the gate and not have to worry about that, but I just want to make sure, because I'm going to California for a long time and can't risk losing my luggage.

Yes, of course. That is provided both flights are booked on the same ticket. If you book two seperate tickets, you are responsible for transferring the luggage. But in your case, it sounds like one ticket, therefore it does not matter whether you have one or eight layovers. The luggage tag affixed at Houston will show the labels Houston -> Phoenix -> Sacramento (in code) along with the relevant flight numbers for the baggage handlers to see.

Well, when you checked in at the airport, did you mention your final destination is Sacramento? If so then the airline will automatically transfer your bags and you will not have to worry about this. This makes things easy for you because, if you did have to get your bags, then you'd have to go through security and all the hassle again. So, don't worry... your checked in bags will be transferred! I've traveled a lot... so ans. is based on past experience.
