How does gate check work

How does gate check work?
If I have flights from boston to denver and from denver to sacramento, and i give my bag at the gate (not at TSA screening), where do i get my bag back? do i get it when getting off the plane in denver? or will it go all the way to baggage claim at sacramento?

All gate checked bags should be picked up at plane side right after arrival of the same flight. Right after you've stepped out of the plane of each flight, you should just wait there and your bags will be brought up to the ramp.

Not all gate checked bags will be waiting for you at the ramp - it depends on the carriers policies. Some airlines will have gate checked bags sent to baggage claim unless it is marked "Special Handling" like for infant strollers. Your bags should be checked all the way to SMF unless you are connecting with another airline.

When you go to the airport in Boston and check in for your flight, you will give your luggage to either the stand outside the terminal where sometimes they check in baggage -- or go inside to the ticket counter and give your luggage to them there at the ticket counter desk inside the terminal. Be sure you check your baggage all the way to Sacramento. Then you do not have to worry about your checked baggage until you get to Sacramento (no worries in Denver) Then go to baggage claim in Sacramento at the end of the trip to get your luggage. You cannot give your baggage to the Gate person unless it is a small carry-on bag that does not fit into the overhead compartment. If they take that piece at the gate or door of the airplane, then you do have to collect it at Denver and take it with you on to the next flight.

All gate checked baggage must be claimed in baggage - they will not deliver it plane side unless it is needed for mobility (stroller, wheelchair, etc.).
