Word problem help set and solve?
An airplane flew from Chicago to Sacramento a distance of 2860mls. Cause there was a tailwind, the flight took 5.5 hours. There was a headwind on the return flight. The trip took 6.5 hours. What was the speed of the airplane in calm air and what was the speed of the wind?

Use the equation D=rt On the way over t=5.5, D=2600 2860=r*5.5 r=520 mph On the way back t=6.5 2860=r*6.5 r=440 mph I am assuming the wind in each direction was the same but in opposite directions. Meaning that the the rate should be the average of the two other rates because if you imagine, the wind was equally helping and hindering the plane on its flights. Therefore r=(520+440)/2 = 480 mph

Going, the speed was 2860/5.5 = 520 mph. Returning, the speed was 2860/6.5 = 440 mph. Average speed = (520 + 440)/2 = 480 mph. Wind speed = (520 - 480) = (480 - 440) = 40 mph.
