The total elapsed time is anywhere from about 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours. Nonstop flights are about 4 1/2 hours. Anything with a stop is longer. The "exact" time is never really exact. The scheduled time is really only approximate in the best case. Southwest has a few non-stop flights from Midway airport to Sacramento. United and US airways have non-stops from O'Hare. Any airline is actually about as good as any other. Many people like Southwest, and they do have a good reputation. They do not assign seats, however; rather, they put you into seating groups - depending on when you check in for the flight - and when your group is called, then it is first come first served for seating. Some people think that is fine, others don't. For Southwest tickets, you need to look on their website: http://www.southwest.com/?int=GNAVHOMELOGO For other airlines, I tend to use the Kayak site for travel searches, and that web site is: http://www.kayak.com/ The drive from Sacramento to LA is about 400 miles - depending a lot on the end point in the LA area. With no traffic issues, you are looking at 6 1/4 hours - but it could be 8 to 9 hours really, depending on when you arrive in the area and what your eventual destination is - in other words, how far you have to drive through the rush hour traffic. The flight time between the two is about 1 1/2 hours, and there are several airports you could choose from as the destination, depending on which one is closest to where you want to be: LAX, of course, Burbank, Orange County, Long Beach and Ontario. Amtrak trains take anywhere from about 7 hours to 14+ hours, depending on the particular train you choose and where it goes. Most choices seem to involve two or more different trains. See: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage Greyhound bus service is from about 7 1/2 hours to about 9 1/2 hours. See: https://www.greyhound.com/default.aspx Personally, I would drive the Sacramento to LA segment, but I like to drive. I assume that you would want a car in LA anyhow, so you need to have a rental in any case. Depending on your schedule, you could fly from Chicago to Sacramento, then drive (or whatever) to LA, and leave from LA to go back to Chicago. That would be a Multi-City booking. Easy to do on most travel sites. It would save the gas for the return drive, but would most likely require a drop off fee from the rental car company since you would be returning the car in LA. You could also book flights that go: Chicago -> Sacramento, then Sacramento -> LA, then LA -> Chicago, if that fits the schedule you have. That is still a multi-city itinerary that sites like Kayak can easily do. That would eliminate any drop off fee for the car, and would save a lot of gas. You will find tons of information on all of those sites I posted. Take your time and look at various options.

A flight from Chicago to Sacramento will be about 5 - 7 hours because you most likely have to make 2 flights. At least I did. I really recommend Delta Airlines, or American Airlines. Both of them are really good. A drive to Los Angeles from Sacramento will be about 6 hours at least. Most likely 6 and a half. I drove from LA to San Fran, It would about 6 hours. Have fun on your trip. :)
