How's the drive from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe during Winter?
I'm flying into Sacramento on January 20th on my way to Lake Tahoe. I maped it and saw we have to drive through a national park/forrest. I was wondering how often the passes are closed due to snow during this time of the year? I know Reno is closer but there weren't any direct flights that day and they were way more expensive. We will be renting a vehicle.

From Sacramento Airport to South Lake Tahoe you should be safe taking highway 50 going through Placerville. The road elevates quickly after passing Pollick Pines and becomes very mountainous at over 800 elevation. The roads are windy and can become icy if it becomes cold enough...which is likely at that time of year. Snow can seriously slow you up and if it is a storm the highway patrol may either close the road if it gets really serious or make drivers put chains on or they won't let you pass. Being that you are renting a vehicle is a bonus as you can ask the attendant for the most current weather conditions...and have a great trip.
