I am currently searching cheapoair.com for your itinerary on your travel dates. The cheapest I found was $1805.50 for all of you with taxes. That is around $420 per ticket. If you leave from Dulles to Sacramento via Long Beach, the price for all of you is $1700 ($400 per ticket). If you return on the 28th, the price for all of you drops to $1600. This is on Continental from Baltimore to Houston, then on to Sacramento, and on the way back, Sacramento to Denver, then Denver to Reagen National on Frontier Airlines. I used priceline.com and cheapoair.com Have a great trip!

If you want to find the best fares, you have to (be incredibly lucky or) be a bit flexible. BWI is likely to be cheaper, in general, but check IAD and DCA, too. Look at flights to SFO or OAK, which are almost certainly going to be cheaper. Be prepared to fly at different times of day, or on different days. Departure on the 6th or the 8th is likely to be cheaper. Returning is likely to be cheaper on the 29th or 31st.

Call a travel agent. They will find you the best fare they can and make sure that the airlines have baggage and ticketing agreements, explain the fare rules to you, and get you the flights that will fit your requirements best. They can also advise you if you REALLY have a long enough connection time between your flights. Plus if something happens with your airline tickets (think schedule changes, natural disasters ceasing travel, or just you need to change or cancel) Its one simple call to them versus staying on hold for sometimes hours to speak to someone who is probably not even in the same country as you and is not empowered to make any decisions!

If http://www.kayak.com does not have anything in your price range, try Southwest Airlines.
