Transatlantic airfares vary a lot based on seasonal demand. Summer airfares are most expensive; I would expect SMF (Sacramento) to Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, or Dusseldorf in the range of $1300 roundtrip. In winter, probably $450-$550, and spring/fall maybe $850. I'm not pulling these out of the air; I track transatlantic flight prices closely on a daily basis--for years. Of course you'll have to connect somewhere, since there aren't any nonstop flights between Sacramento and Europe. If you could go from San Francisco, then there are some nonstop flights to Germany. However, nonstops aren't necessarily cheaper than connecting flights. I did a quick check for you, from SFO, OAK, SJC (San Jose), and of course SMF, and cheapest I see in June is $1060 from SMF to FRA. Unfortunately, you missed a really good sale about a month ago, with flights from SFO to Munich under $600rt in June, July, or August. I know... do'h! (I've been in your situation!). See if you can do better than $1060 by checking these consolidators. If not, then you can book it from AA.com. IF she could depart in May, I'm seeing much cheaper fares. $790 roundtrip from SMF, for example, also on American Airlines, outbound May 17 and back 1 week later. Lufthansa has a similar fare, but the return flight times are awful.
