Is Cal Poly San Luis Obispo a good school

Is Cal Poly San Luis Obispo a good school?
I took a tour, I loved it. I'm considering majoring in Graphics Communications at Cal Poly, besides not being able to easily obtain classes, and having to declare your major, whats bad about the place? Whats good? And does anyone know if they are going to make a direct flight from Sacramento to San Luis Obispo any time soon?

1) Check on US News.com, I believe they still post the school rankings for most colleges in the US but keep in mind that this doesn't tell you everything about the school. 2) I visited Calpoly when I was apply to colleges and the biggest thing I noticed was about 90% of the students were white. Which tells me their student population might not be the most diverse. I remember the school specializes in the sciences (engineering, architecture, computer science, etc) I know for sure that it is ranked below any of the UCs but I'm not sure what kind of material you will be studying if you plan to major in "Graphics Communcations" to me that sounds like marketing? 3) Declaring majors should not be a concern of yours. Most students attending colleges will change their major at least once. Colleges know this and you will have a a degree of flexibility changing your major. The benefit of declaring the major you know you would like to study is the fact that you won't have to try and get into the major (if it is impacted). 4) Btw Southwest usually has the best rates in CA flying anywhere and it would take seconds to check if they have flights going to calpoly. 5) Go Aggs! (guess where I go), good luck!

I am currently a freshman majoring in General Engineering with a minor in Pysics at Cal Poly slo and I love it! As far as engineering Cal Poly is one of the best on the west coast. You have UCB, UCLA, Stanford, and Cal Tech of course, but Cal Poly is right up there and is very well respected. I don't know much about any of the other colleges here though. But I think the graphics communications dept. is pretty good. We have a great school newspaper, I know that. Cal Poly is the best CSU by far and is better than some of the lesser UCs. One thing I like about cp is the smaller class sizes. My lower division classes have all been around 20-30 students. Some of the GEs such as psych will be larger of course though. At a school like UCLA you might be taking classes in huge lecture halls a lot. You mentioned the difficulty of getting the classes you need. That is definitely a problem. If you don't get a good priority during registration you are going to have to wait list and crash classes. The budget crisis is really causing some issues as this is a state school. I love the town of slo. Its beautiful here, weather is great, the people are great, and it definitely has that college town feel. I'm sure you know how close to the beach it is, I have been learning to surf which has been fun. I spent this afternoon watching a baseball game. I also work out at the rec center often (free for students). There are two movie theaters in town, and some good restaurants, farmers market on Thursdays. There is a lot to do here. Don't worry too much about the changing majors. If you want to go from graphics communications to a math or science it will be tough, but I think people usually can get things worked out. I don't have very many bad things to say about it. Some of the buildings are older and get really hot and stuffy. The on-campus food isn't that great. I get tired of walking uphill on campus sometimes, but its not too bad. By the way Cal Poly is much better than UC Davis haha
